Royal & Awesome sets the pace with British SpeedGolf
Scotland’s funkiest clothing brand, Royal & Awesome, has been quick off the starting blocks to add a dash of colour to the 2015 British Open Speedgolf Championship. The challenge, which combines a golfer’s running pace with their ability to quickly and accurately play their shots, will take place on August 16, at Dale Hill GC, in East Sussex – and a Speedgolf taster session will be staged on June 29, also at Dale Hill.
Organisers of the events will be kitted head to toe in Royal & Awesome’s patriotic Trew Brit design while the championship winners will also be rewarded with a pair of the dazzling trews.
Speedgolf is a faster, more athletic version of golf, in which participants play 18 holes in less than 80 minutes or nine holes in less than 40 minutes. It involves playing a round in the lowest possible sum of shots, combined with the time taken to run the golf course – so, shooting a round of 90 in a time of 70 minutes and 21 seconds would give a Speedgolf score of 160.21.
And participants have even more reason to get involved since – by pledging just £10 to Sparks, the children’s medical research charity – they can compete against golfers across the UK in the Kriss Akabusi Speed King National Leader Board, also supported by Royal & Awesome.
Dale Hill Hotel and Golf Club general manager Carl Rundgren said: “Golf is widely regarded as a sport where people do no more than swing at a stationary ball while gently strolling through the countryside.
“Speedgolf is an extreme version of the great game and one which gets the heart racing, blood pumping and takes the sport to new limits and away from its traditionally staid image.
“Leaderboard and Dale Hill are honoured to be involved in this year’s British Speedgolf Championships as official host – let the fun begin!”
Royal & Awesome brand director Graeme Smeaton added: “We’re delighted to be able to help draw attention to this exciting, contemporary twist on the traditional game. There will be flashes of funky, bright Royal & Awesome colours up and down the fairways of Dale Hill on the day of the event.”
