With the Rugby World Cup getting up to speed we thought we’d have a bit of fun and pick our best rugby team of present day golfers. Who’d make your team past or present? This is perfect fodder for endless pub arguments.
- Kevin Stadler – One of the heaviest players on tour to anchor our scrum
- Patrick Reed – He’s a pretty big unit and has so much rage he’s a natural for hooker.
- John Daly – Possibly not at his all time fittest but he’ll add some ballast to the scrum and be excellent value on tour.
- Ernie Els (captain) – The big easy is a big man and being South African no doubt comes from good rugby stock.
- Craig Smith – He’s 6ft 8in and is the tallest professional player currently on tour. He’ll do for the lineout then.
- Tiger Woods – 6ft 1in of power and focus make Tiger our hard-man enforcer.
- Paul Casey – He’s not the biggest but his bulging forearms and bear strength have earned him the nick name PopEye – so we think he’ll be good for a turnover or two.
- Dustin Johnson – He’s a big lad and looks like a good athlete, plus if some of the other players’ wives come to watch he’ll be out to impress.
- Sergio Garcia – Feisty and with the ability to create moments of magic, Garcia is the perfect choice to boss the forwards and unleash the backs.
- Rory McIlroy – He’s obviously been loving the gym recently and we know that he’s a keen, if injury prone footballer, so he gets the nod in the key play maker role.
- Rickie Fowler – Apparently he is one of the fastest players on tour so we’re giving him a place on the wing. Although this might be referring to his speed of play.
- Jason Day – He looks pretty athletic and Aussies are good at sport so we’ll give him a run.
- Adam Scott – Centre partnerships are all about chemistry and understanding so we gone for an all Australian combo, ala Horan and Little. Go you good thing go.
- Martin Kaymer – The lean mean German machine is an ice cold finisher.
- Jordan Spieth – The American golden boy can do no wrong so he seems a sensible choice for a safe pair of hand at the back.
Are there any other golfers you think deserve a spot in this starting XV? Let us know in the comments below.
i would have the longest hitter at no15 so he can return the ball back to the other half
Aphibarnrat for #3 (John Daly can bring out the drinks).
Stadler’s too tall for a prop, he can be reserve lock, your ideal man for #1 is Thongchai Jaidee. Oh, and I’d swop Fowler to #9 and Garcia on the wing!!
Chris Wood in for Els for height in the line out.
